For the second night in a row, the Eagles hockey team forced a shootout and came out on top! The Eagles started fast scoring within the first two minutes of the game when Logan Kowalke scored on a shot with an assist from Gavin Brandow, but then it was Jackson scoring the next two goals on the power play to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room after one. The Eagles would play shorthanded for almost half the second period and were outshot 11-3 but sophomore goalie, Kayson Hammersmith stood strong and the score remained 2-1 after two periods. The third period the Eagles struck early when Gavin Brandow scored two minutes in, assisted by Dalen McAfee. Jackson would go up two minutes later, but with ten minutes left it was Tyler Cicero scoring with an assist from Justin Dusendang to tie the game, and with clutch goaltending down the stretch and solid defense the third period would end all tied up 3-3. The Eagles were going to a three-player shootout for the second night in a row. The Eagles would shoot first and be stopped by the Jackson goalie, so Jackson shot second and scored on their first chance. Each teams second shooters would both miss and it was Lucas Brandow who shot third and scored for the Eagles. Now the Eagles needed Kayson Hammersmith to make a big save to extend the shootout which he did. The next shooter for each team would be stopped, then it was Dalen McAfee to score for the Eagles, but Jackson would answer, also scoring. Now we entered the sixth round and junior Owen McNeil would not be denied with a great shot over the goalie's glove to take the lead. Jackson still had a chance to tie but Hammersmith denied that opportunity and made a big save to earn his first varsity career win!! Hammermsith made four breakaway saves in the shootout and faced 32 shots in the game. The Eagles are now 5-4 on the year and return to league play vs Grand haven on Wednesday December 17th at Lakeshore Ice arena at 7:30 PM. Come out and cheer on the Eagles!!
