Big First Inning Fuels Freshman Eagles’ 16-0 Rout Over West Ottawa

By Ryan Szlachcic | May 1, 2026 6:55 PM

The Hudsonville Freshman Eagles wasted no time taking control Thursday night, exploding for nine runs in the first inning on their way to a dominant 16-0 win over West Ottawa. Hudsonville came out aggressive from the first pitch, stringing together quality at-bats and capitalizing on every opportunity. Skyler Slotman got things rolling with an RBI triple, followed by a run-scoring single from James Brock. Easton Morton delivered a two-run single, and the Eagles continued to pour it on with the help of an error, a two-run single from Micah McPhaul, and a two-run double by Andreson Visser to cap the massive inning. Already in full control, the Eagles added another run in the second when Morton stayed hot with a single down the left field line to extend the lead. Hudsonville wasn’t done yet. In the third inning, they tacked on six more runs to put the game completely out of reach. Tyler Reibel knocked in a run with a single, while continued pressure led to multiple errors that brought in additional runs. Trenton Ratuszny added an RBI groundout, and Brady Buchanan delivered a two-run single to highlight another big inning. On the mound, Finnegan Rayla was sharp and efficient. He tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking one in a clean, controlled outing. Offensively, the Eagles totaled 10 hits and showed strong production throughout the lineup. Morton and Gavin Workman each collected two hits, while Morton, Buchanan, Visser, and McPhaul all drove in two runs apiece. Workman also made an impact scoring runs, crossing the plate three times, while McPhaul added two runs and two RBIs in a productive day at the top of the lineup. Hudsonville stayed aggressive on the bases, swiping five bags, and played a clean defensive game without committing an error. Visser led the defensive effort with four chances, helping anchor another solid performance in the field. In all, it was a complete team win—timely hitting, disciplined at-bats, aggressive baserunning, and strong pitching all coming together. The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going as they return home Friday to take on a DH versus Grand Rapids Christian.
